A CAI (centre for reception and identification of migrants) was realized in the spring of 2011 at the Andolfato military barracks in Santa Maria Capua Vetere (Caserta). The walls and fencing, were built to reach extreme heights, enclose and hide a highly ambiguous space. Prior to the 4th of April 2011 the CAI had only hosted several hundreds of refugees, for the large part being Tunisian citizens who had escaped from their country’s unstable political governance after the destitution of Ben Alì. After a very limited period of time the CAI closed its doors and then could only be observed from outside. It became impossible for the press to access the centre, hence making the perimeter walls an unmistakeable symbol: the fight for human rights.
